A Brief History of LMA

Loescher Meachem Architects/LMA was created in 2012 by architects John Meachem and Ben Loescher.  As former colleagues in firm leadership at Clive Wilkinson Architects, John and Ben honed their working relationship to capitalize on their respective knowledge and experience. In 2012, the pair left CWa to re-engage in direct involvement in day to day practice.

In an aluminum travel trailer in a parking lot next to a Discount Tire Center, LMA was born. Initially formed to support two significant workplace projects being designed by Bestor Architecture, the practice quickly assembled a team of innovators, designers and subject matter experts to extend its own capabilities for large design-oriented projects, synthesizing creativity with technical and problem-solving capabilities.

LMA is now one of Los Angeles’ most talked about architectural practices, specializing in design and construction of cutting-edge creative workplace and adaptive re-use projects. In addition to working for a portfolio of respected businesses and institutions, LMA also provides project management, production and administration services to other designers and architects who wish to leverage LMA’s experience to benefit their own firms.

Good architecture doesn’t
start with design.

It begins by knowing the
right questions to ask.
Then, we listen to the answers.

Good design is not simply the result of satisfying programming goals — while pragmatics guide us, the sociology and psychology of a space are equally fundamental. A workplace can be an environment which is supportive of the client’s culture, or it can stand in the way of success. Open work environments can create incredible synergy or can cause distraction. Privacy can provide productive respite or can silo individuals to the point where work stagnates. One size rarely fits all. A successful work environment is one which satisfies the needs of the individual as well as the collective, resulting in the success of both.

We believe we are in business to serve and to elevate our clients, not to create signature architecture. The fact that our work stands out from the crowd is due to the high level of engagement we achieve with our clients. As a result we are able to listen, understand, and translate their vision into an architecture that supports it. Because of this collaborative process, the result is almost always extraordinary.

We collaborate with our clients to implement environmental technologies and materials to ensure resources are efficiently, effectively, and creatively employed; thus crafting healthy work and learning spaces. Reducing energy costs is an added bonus.
